I picked up my humminbird back in December of 2012. I never did any software updates yet. We make updates to current line models a few times per year and sometimes a unit might be in transit or on a dealers shelf while the latest software is released. When you register your new Humminbird Helix 7 Fishfinder online at the Humminbird site they recommend that you install the software update.
